Finding a job in Turkey (for expatriates)

Recruitment agencies have stated that expat job seekers who aim to find employment in Turkey stand a better chance by being there in person. Ideally a longer period of time is advisable however if monetary or time constraints persist, then shorter holidays with targeted job searching activities can reap rewards. Key Turkish cities such as Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara attract expats not only because of their booming economies but also also because of their cultural and cosmopolitan attractions making them more amenable for Europeans.

Either way, personal contact in this ‘high context’ culture is crucial. A good starting point is networking with other expats in Turkey who already have experience of working there and may have existing contacts that can be tapped into.

As with any employment overseas, any potential candidate needs to indicate to the employer that their aims are genuine and long-term. Bad luck in the home country or ‘something different’ are unlikely to convince employers who want to attract not only experience but commitment and reliability.

Furthermore, as we have stated in numerous articles on this site, cultural and linguistic skills remain vital for expatriates particularly in the domestic Turkish market. Current expatriate job seekers can start familiarising themselves with the Turkish language and business etiquette with the EU-funded HandsOnTurkish course. They can also start working towards internationally recognised certificates for their CV which will undoubtedly help their chances in an increasingly competitive and globalised market.
