Cappadocia, a tourist attraction with stunning rock formations
Lying right in the middle of Anatolia, north of the Taurus Mountains is Cappadocia. Cappadocia is considered one of the most beautiful regions in Turkey and attracts lots of tourists. They come to see the stunning rock formations called “fairy chimneys” situated around the village of Göreme. These chimneys are created from sedimentary rock deposits as a result of erosion by wind and rain.
Some of the oldest churches in the world can be found in Cappadocia
The inhabitants of Cappadocia have used this unique geology to create cave dwellings. Some of the oldest churches in the world have been carved into these formations. Many of them were only rediscovered in the 1950s. The hermits were the first Christians who came to Cappadocia. They used the caves to live a life of seclusion. Later these hermits formed groups and founded a community.
The area which contains the most beautiful rock churches of Göreme has been turned into a natural park and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
